As stated before, this was one of the greatest blunders of the defense. Not only was it in their clients’ best interest to have at least two separate trials, but once it was decided to have the seven men (prior to Parsons’s return) tried at the same time, Parsons could have returned a day later and been granted a separate trial automatically.

At the trial, which of the defendants were inside Zeph’s, who saw whom there and when they saw them all became major points of attack for the prosecution and repelling for the defense. There was security in claiming that person X was inside the hall when the bomb was thrown (for obvious reasons), but it gave little protection under the barrage of testimony that seemed to indicate the bombing was the result of a conspiracy—and from this there was little refuge.
